Chemical Peels

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a type of skin care treatment that uses a chemical solution to exfoliate the top layer of your skin. This solution can help improve the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and more. Chemical peels use various acids that penetrate your skin to different depths, depending on your unique needs and the sensitivity of your skin.

How to Prepare for a Chemical Peel

Preparing for a chemical peel is important to ensure the treatment goes as smoothly as possible. To prepare, be sure to remove all makeup and cleanse your skin thoroughly before treatment. Additionally, your esthetician may suggest using specific products leading up to the appointment that can help prep the skin and improve results or discontinuing the use of certain products prior to your peel.

It’s also important to avoid sun exposure before and after the peel in order to minimize risks. A broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 should be used throughout treatment and during recovery.

Before you undergo a chemical peel, it is important that you have a consultation. During this time, you will discuss why you want the procedure as well as what kind of results you can expect. In addition, your medical history and any medications that you are currently taking will be reviewed to ensure that undergoing a chemical peel is safe for you.

A physical examination of the skin is performed next in order to assess factors such as thickness, health, and condition. Photographs may be taken before the procedure in order to document the current state of the skin as well as several weeks later to document your results.

The 2-4 weeks leading up to your chemical peel are crucial in preparing your skin for treatment. This period is called "priming," and during this time it's important to limit UV exposure and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher every morning. Additionally, avoid waxing, laser treatments, and dermabrasion of the face.

The Chemical Peel Process

The chemical peel will take place in a secluded room with good lighting and ventilation. You will be lying down on your back with your eyes closed during the procedure. A handheld fan is provided to use during the application to ease any tingling or other sensations felt during the treatment.

Depending on the peeling agent used, the application method may vary. A fan brush or gauze may be used to apply the solution to the treatment area. Cotton tip applicators may be used to treat target areas with more precision.

Once the process is complete, you will receive instructions detailing when to wash your face and apply any post-treatment products. Be sure to ask your provider if you have any additional questions.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

After a chemical peel, your skin may redden similar to a sunburn. You may also feel some tightness. Post-treatment products will be discussed or provided after the procedure. You may begin to experience some peeling or flaking three to five days after the chemical peel. It may take a few days to a week to subside.

You can usually apply makeup 24-hours after your chemical peel, unless instructed otherwise. For the skin to go back to normal and show complete results of the peel though, it may take several months. To make the effects of the chemical peel last longer, we suggest following a proper skin care regimen and avoiding too much sun exposure.

If you're looking for an affordable way to improve your skin, chemical peels are a great option. But it's important to work with an experienced provider who can help you choose the right peel and make sure you understand the risks and benefits involved. With the right treatment plan, chemical peeling can be safe and successful.

Chemical Peel FAQs

When will I notice the chemical peel results?

After your skin has healed, you will see the results. These results depend on both the type of peel as well as your unique skin concerns. In some cases, it may take weeks to several months to start seeing results. To get the results you want from a chemical peel, you may need 3 or more treatments.

How long do the chemical peel results last?

Results are not permanent because our skin continues to age, although some may last longer than others. If you have extensive sun-damage or precancerous growths, it's likely that you'll continue to see new spots and growths appear on your skin.

What are the possible side effects?

With an experienced treatment provider, side effects from chemical peels are usually minor. Some people may experience:

·        Mild redness.

·        Darkening brown spots (prior to them sloughing off).

·        Mild flaking to moderate peeling.

You are more likely to experience adverse reactions if you don't follow your provider’s orders. Make sure you're following the doctor's instructions before and after your chemical peel.

·        Protect your skin from the sun.

·        Care for your skin as instructed.

·        Don't pick, pull, or remove the treated skin.

·        Don’t use a tanning bed or other type of indoor tanning.

When is it acceptable to have a follow-up chemical peel?

Lighter peels can be done as maintenance to freshen up the skin monthly. Your esthetician will tell you how often you need a repeat treatment.

What is the safety record for chemical peels?

Plastic surgeons, estheticians, and dermatologists have been safely performing chemical peels for over 50 years. If performed by an experienced provider using the appropriate peel for each patient's skin type and condition, chemical peels are safe. Be sure to talk to your esthetician about any concerns you may have.

Chemical peels have come a long way since they were first developed and today, they can offer fantastic results that improve the overall appearance of the skin without a lot of downtime. With the proper care and maintenance, you can enjoy smoother, younger looking skin for years to come!
