Houston Breast Implants

For over a decade, Dr. Lou has been a trusted surgeon for women seeking breast implants in Houston. Breast implant surgery is common and accessible now. However, we believe it’s essential to work with our patients every step of the way. Knowing your options will help you make an informed decision. During your breast augmentation consultation, we will discuss your goals and lifestyle in order to provide you with the best care.

A breast implant consists of a shell filled with sterile water or silicone gel. Breast implant surgery is performed to increase the breast size for cosmetic reasons, or to replace missing tissue following a mastectomy. Breast implants also improve breast symmetry and shape.

What Types of Breast Implants are Available?

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants consist of sterile saltwater that provides a uniformly-shaped breast. They are safe to use in women as young as 18 years old. Saline implants can be pre-filled or filled upon placement after the shell is in place.

Structured Saline Breast Implants

Like the saline implant, a structured implant contains sterile salt water. The only difference is, with a structured implant, the shell has an inner structure. This structure provides stability and a more natural feel to the breast.

Silicone Breast Implants

This implant is filled with a thick, sticky gel that has a density like naturally existing breast tissue. Many women believe that silicone implants most closely resemble natural breasts in appearance and feel. Silicone gel implants are approved for use in breast augmentation procedures for women aged 22 and up. However, they can be used in breast reconstruction surgery at any age.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Gummy bear implants are filled with a silicone gel that is firmer and thicker than regular silicone. They are tapered at the top and have more projection at the bottom.

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants give the breasts a full appearance. Saline or silicone can be used to fill the implant. Because this shell has a uniform shape, rotation is not usually noticeable.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants have a shiny and slippery outer shell that can be filled with either saline or silicone gel. These implants are able to move within the breast pocket, providing a similar motion to natural breast tissue.

Textured Breast Implants

A textured implant has a rough silicone elastomer  shell. This type of implant will cause the development of scar tissue around the implant. The scar tissue helps stabilize the implant within the breast, reducing the risk of repositioning.

How is it Done?

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes two hours and is performed in an outpatient setting.

How Do I Prepare?

You will be instructed to hydrate well in the days leading up to your procedure. The night before your cosmetic surgery, you must shower and scrub yourself thoroughly. Food and water are prohibited after midnight. You may not drink coffee or chew gum the morning of your procedure. You may brush your teeth but take care to not swallow any water.

Anesthesia

Local or general anesthesia will be utilized during the surgery. Local anesthesia will keep you awake during the surgical procedure. General anesthesia will put you to sleep.

Incision

The type of implant chosen will determine the incision site. Plastic surgeons may make an incision under the breast, arms, or around the nipples. Dr. Lou will discuss  this with you before the procedure.

Insertion and Placement

Insertion and placement will also depend on the type of implant used. During breast surgery, the implant can be placed over the pectoral muscle or partially beneath it.

Closing

In closing the incision, a layered suture in the breast tissue is utilized. Another way of closing it is through a combination of sutures and surgical tape.

Results

The initial results of breast implant surgery are visible immediately after the procedure. However, final results can take four to six weeks as the implants settle into their position.

Recovery and Life After Breast Implantation

After breast enlargement surgery, a compression bra will be worn to support the breast and reduce swelling. Dr. Lou will prescribe medication for pain relief and to prevent infection. To avoid complications, strenuous activities are not allowed for the next few days. Consult with Dr. Lou for exercises that can be done during the recovery period.

Breast implants are not permanent and may need to be replaced. A typical breast implant lasts more than a decade, with some lasting more than 20 years. One reason for replacement is implant leakage. Thus, regular breast screenings are recommended. Those with silicone gel breast implants are especially advised to undergo regular screening. This can be done using mammography, ultrasound, or an MRI.

Breasts with implants are still affected by the natural aging process. Because of this, breast lift surgery (also known as a mastopexy) may be required  to maintain a higher position and reduce sagging.
